Thermometer Reading Instructions
SAMHSA Approved Guidelines
The collector must check the temperature of the specimen within four minutes after receiving the specimen from the donor. The temperature measuring device must be able to accurately read the temperature and must not contaminate the specimen. The collector must indicate on the CCF whether the specimen was within the acceptable temperature range (i.e., 90° - 100°F; 32° – 38°C). If the specimen is outside the acceptable range, this is reason to believe that the donor may have adulterated or substituted the specimen, and another specimen must be collected under direct observation.
Temperature Interpretations
- Green = Exact Temperature. If you do not see green, then look for blue and tan colors
- Blue = add 1°F or .5°C
- Tan = subtract 1°F or .5°C
For example, if the dot under 92° is blue the true temperature is 93°F. If the dot under 94° is tan the true temperature is 93°F.
Instructions about reading the thermometer are printed on each unit located in the black section above the Celsius scale.
